Landlord registration fees soar over just six years

A Freedom of Information request has revealed just how much landlord registration costs have soared in recent years in Scotland.

Mandatory private landlord registration was implemented in Scotland April 2006 and fees remained static for no less than 13 years until March 2019.

For all that time the principal application fee was £55, the property fee was £11 and a late application fee was £110.

However, after 13 years of static fees there have been no fewer than five increases since 2019, and next month – March 2025 – the sixth rise kicks in.

From then onwards the principal application fee will be £80, the property fee £18, and the late application fee £160.

In recent years there has also been an additional fee levies on landlords with properties in two or more different local authorities – for each property, the landlord must from March pay an extra £40.
