Labour MP Chris Hinchiff has welcomed the Acorn group of rental activists into the House of Commons.
In the past, some activists within Acorn have entered lettings agents’ offices to protest, campaigned outside landlords’ homes and disrupted council meetings.
In spring 2022 a landlord was reported to have won £100,000 in damages from Acorn following what was described as a campaign of harassment against her. At the time Acorn issued an unreserved apology about what it called “very serious, defamatory and false allegations” about the landlord.
Now the organisation is being courted by MP Hinchiff, who is a member of the Environmental Audit Committee, a Commons body which says it checks the government work on environmental protection and sustainability.
On social media platform X Hinchiff tweets: “I welcomed @ACORNunion members to Parliament.
“Acorn’s vital campaigning supports people with insecure housing throughout the country.
“I’m delighted Acorn is backing many of my proposals for the Planning and Infrastructure Bill.
“Affordable homes for all!”
Acorn itself tweeted: “We’re at Parliament today, invited by @CHinchliffMP, to support amendments that would stop letting developers off the hook when it comes to providing affordable and social housing”.
