Ignore the moaners – landlords and tenants DO get on well together

A new survey of 500 UK-based landlords and 2,000 tenants has found that – despite often negative reports – 66% of private tenants have a positive relationship with their landlord.

On top of that, over three quarters (77%) maintain good lines of communication. Only one in eight (13%) reported having a negative relationship, with the rest stating it was neither positive nor negative.

In the survey by buy to let specialist lender Aldermore,Nearly two thirds of tenants (63%) report that their landlord is easy to get hold of if there’s an issue. The vast majority of landlords (89%) prioritise proper upkeep of their portfolios, including essential repairs and regular checks.

However, landlords also seem to be going the extra mile with more than a third (35%) of private renters who have had a positive experience revealing their landlord has proactively offered support and help with the property when not requested.

Nearly one in five (18%) of private renters who have had a positive experience said their landlord made thoughtful touches to the property. Over a third of tenants (35%) say their landlord has allowed them to make cosmetic changes to the property and a third (34%) have allowed their tenants to keep pets.

Jon Cooper, director of mortgages at Aldermore, comments: “Being a good landlord isn’t just about collecting rent. It’s about creating a safe and well-maintained property, coupled with open communication that creates a professional and respectful relationship with a tenant.

“Despite some negative reports of the tenant/landlord relationship, our data shows that the majority have positive experiences, with many landlords making a proactive effort to improve the living situation of renters.”
